Kind of boring (but good) day today. We packed up our little apartment and hit the road. We are staying at another Airbnb so we stopped at a grocery store to get enough snacks and breakfasts for the next couple of days. We have discovered a new roadtrip snack that Nick and I have both fallen in love with: chevda. Adding it to my list of things that should exist in the US.

Driving here is an experience. In the cities everything is chaotic with lots of free-for-all roundabouts. The highways should be simpler but they aren’t. Most roads are two lanes and packed with semis going about, I kid you not, 10-15 mph. So it’s a lot of passing. This would be fine except all the trucks pass each other too, so it’s just a constant game of chicken and merging.
We tried to stop at Lake Elmenteita to see the flamingoes that live there, but when buying our tickets the guard told us there weren’t many. We decided to save the $50 entry fee and drive on.

An hour later we reached our destination of Nakuru National Park. Similarly we were faced with a very high entrance fee ($120 this time) and it was threatening to rain, meaning we wouldn’t see many animals. We decided to just call it off and head to our Airbnb.
On our way we drove past this school. I loved this mural along the whole wall.

We arrived at our remote but very nice Airbnb. It is beside a game lodge so we can use all their facilities, while still having the benefits of the Airbnb (a full kitchen, two bedrooms). It’s the best of both worlds, and much cheaper than staying inside the lodge.

After a few hours in the car I promised Millie we could go to the pool. We swam in the icy water for about 10 minutes and then it started to drizzle. We met another family there who was from Houston. The world is small and Texas is huge. They are in the middle of moving here to open a school.
It started to pour and we headed back to put on dry clothes. We were hungry so walked over to the lodge restaurant. The rain poured down on the straw roof while we ate hot curry. It was heaven.

Millie realized it was Ice Cream Friday and had a milkshake with dinner. Her first ever milkshake!

She wanted to take turns drawing various scenarios. After we noticed that hers were mostly complaints, Nick and I cracked ourselves up taking turns drawing pretend happy scenarios she could find herself in.

We hung outside a bit in the rain and then headed back to our cabin.

We had plans for a safari tomorrow but there is more rain in the forecast and we are enjoying this place so much, we are just going to have a lazy day. The beauty of this trip is that we are going to have many more opportunities in the coming week to see animals. So for now we are just going to enjoy a full 24 hours of no car rides.
