Day 115: Lazy day in Knysna

We lounged around all morning in our Airbnb. Millie listened to stories while we got ready. At about 10 we started walking through the island to find a place for breakfast.

We walked past the manicured gardens and lawns. There were older white couples walking their purebred golden retrievers and moms with strollers. The service workers–landscapers, cleaners, etc–were all black and wear matching coveralls. Halfway through our walk, Nick said to me “doesn’t this place feel like Get Out?” And that’s exactly what it feels like.

We had a good breakfast at a busy spot just outside the gates. I literally had to fingerprint scan to get out (no pun intended) and then back in again.

Millie played on a playground for a while. I am debating starting a movement to ban seesaws from playgrounds. They are uninclusive for only children. She always sits on them moping, and then eventually we cave and try to ride them with her, using every bit of leg muscle we have not to put our whole weight on them and catapult her to the moon. Lose-lose.

It was Ice Cream Friday so she got a straciatella cone.

We checked out the community’s big playground.

We attempted to teach Millie chess, which of course then turned into me and Nick in a very serious and intense game of chess.

We ran around the maze in the park.

We came back and hung out at the house. Millie finished her book! It’s 30 pages and a real rollercoaster of a story.

We played a bit of golf on the putting green at the end of the block. It went about 10% better than previous games… lots of “I’m no good at this” and “I want to quit” but no storming off screaming and crying. Progress?

We then went to dinner at a sushi restaurant nearby. Millie was hungry enough to try everything and enjoyed salmon sashimi. It all went well until she mistook wasabi for avocado and took a big bite.

She drew for almost the whole meal and Nick and I were able to actually talk. I don’t know if it’s the large amount of restaurant training she has had on the trip, or her age, or just a lucky night… but it was nice.

We drove 5 minutes home in the rain, grateful to have taken the car just in case the rain started. The sushi took forever so Millie didn’t get into bed until 9:30.
