Day 175: Fly to Shanghai

You all know the drill of a transit day now. Wake up, breakfast, pack-up, taxi to airport.

On our way in we saw the view of the mountain window we visited yesterday. This was our first time seeing it due to the clouds yesterday.

Millie went through by herself. Once again I was very impressed (and a little bit terrified) by how good China’s facial recognition software is.

We had some time to kill at the airport and all had massages from these robo chair things. I always make fun of Nick for trying them but today I did too and was converted.

Flight was quick and uneventful. Once we landed we had to use a lot of energy to keep Millie away from meltdown zone. We were successful but tired. I’m sure any parent of a young kid knows this unique type of tiredness. We are constantly trying to reinforce her, make her laugh, entertain her, correct her behavior while not rocking the boat too much while getting her from point a to point b.

We took a taxi and checked into our little apartment. There isn’t Airbnb here but I did manage to find a very similar setup on booking.com. It’s located down a long alleyway and very cozy inside.

Shanghai immediately feels so different than anywhere else in China. Very western, at least where we are.

Millie drew what she wanted for dinner: carrots and chicken, and definitely NO noodles. She is sick of noodles. We settled for Italian. It was really good and a nice break from the local cuisine we’ve been having. Our waiter spoke to us in English which felt like a novelty after communicating via pointing and translate apps for the last few weeks.

We walked around a bit trying to find a grocery store where we could stock up on things for our little kitchen. Millie was fascinated by the big freezer of chicken feet.

I had hoped to spend this evening booking lodging for our next month or so, but we are both worn out. It’s been a lot of moving from place to place, walking, seeing the sights. We have 6 nights in Shanghai and nothing set in stone on the agenda. I’m looking forward to staying put for just a little while.
