Day 301: Beerenberg Farm & rainy day in Adelaide

We woke up pretty late due to the 2.5 hour time change. It was gray and drizzling so we weren’t in a rush to get anywhere. We lazed around and Millie FaceTimed with family and friends at home.

When the rain stopped we got in the car and drove just over 30 minutes up to the little town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide hills. Hahndorf was settled by Germans in the 19th century and still retains much of the German culture, but in a kitschy touristy way. It was like a copy & paste of Fredericksburg, TX. This supports my working theory that Australia is Texas, or vice versa.

Our destination was Beerenberg farms to go strawberry picking. We paid the small entrance fee and got a cardboard box to fill up. We walked over to the large strawberry field and started picking.

After one minute it started drizzling. And after 5 it started pouring. We picked as quickly as we could and then Millie and I ran for cover while Nick finished filling the box. Of course we neglected to bring Millie’s brand new raincoat.

We waited under a covering with a bunch of cool old signs until the downpour finished.

We had hot chocolate and coffees in the farm cafe to warm up and dry off. We couldn’t resist ordering this little chocolate planter treat. It looked better than it tasted.

From here we were going to visit a kangaroo rescue center, but it would have cost us $100 and I know we will have free opportunities to see roos coming up. We offered to go to a huge playground but all Millie wanted to do was go home to the apartment to chill. With the gray day, we felt similarly.

At home we did the usual activities of reading, drawing, and playing. Millie and I went out for a walk to the store to buy a few baking ingredients so we could make a cake with all our strawberries.

I picked up The Power of Now from the Airbnb’s bookshelf and started it. I kept getting distracted and looking at my phone. Maybe if I ever finish it I will be cured.

We have been calling this Airbnb “the grandma apartment” because it feels like staying with a grandma. It’s extremely clean and feels like an 80 year old woman decorated it. It even smells like a grandma (in a good way). Our theory is that a nice old lady lived here and now her son is renting it out. It’s been a very comforting place to spend two lazy days.
