Day 7: Stonehenge

We headed to Stonehenge this morning. Millie requested music and the song that came on was Willie Nelson’s “Blue Skies”. As we cruised through the countryside on yet another uncharacteristically sunny April day, young Willie sang “Blue skies, smiling at me, nothing but blue skies do I see” and I knew exactly what he was talking about.

We arrived at the visitors center for and went in through the exhibition. Millie asked me lots of good questions about how the people made tools, how they stayed warm, and where they slept. I know these types of museums can be boring for kids—and, speaking from experience, adults—so it was nice that she was actually engaged. Outside the museum there were a series of replica huts which helped answer most of her questions.

We then took the short shuttle up to the stones themselves. As we were boarding the train the driver noticed Nick’s Austin hat and told him it was his favorite city in the world. I always find it interesting what a great reputation Austin has around the world, even for people who live in what I consider to be heaven on earth: the quaint English countryside. The grass is always greener I suppose… though it’s objectively greener here.

The site itself was impressive and I always get a bit starstruck seeing such iconic vistas. Here we are with our host and family friend Greg, who, despite living so close hasn’t visited in years.

We returned to Greg’s house for tea and a cheese sandwich for Millie who said “I’m hungry” no less than 200 times while we were out.

We spent the rest of the afternoon swimming, trampolining, swinging, and generally enjoying the weather and landscape. We ended our day with dinner at the village pub.
