Day 71: Çıralı Beach

Another day of being beach bums. Just like yesterday, we walked down to the beach and picked up water and snacks on the way. We are already out of the sunscreen we bought yesterday. Three very pale people afraid of sun damage are averaging about a bottle a day. I didn’t account for that in my budgeting.

The first thing Millie wanted to do was snorkel. She has graduated from being held while snorkeling to 100% doing it on her own. Nick took her out a little deeper while wearing his snorkel and swimming beside her. I kept hearing muffled happy noises from them when they spotted something.

I don’t have any photos because I was anxiously hovering near them in the water… in case, I don’t know. I’m not even a good swimmer. She is hooked and counting down the years until they can go scuba diving together. This is Nick’s dream coming true.

He wanted to see the Ólympos ruins so he went to explore those while Millie and I built sandcastles and swam. She said “I guess he figured I was over ruins”. It’s been funny to witness her language evolve and we’ve noticed she has started talking like us after so much time together.

One thing that has been really nice about this beach is how un-pushy people are. Restaurants all have these beach chairs set up in front of them. Yesterday when we used some, Nick went to ask how much they were to rent. The guys told us they were free, and then never came to bother us to order drinks or food. In Tunisia you couldn’t step foot on the sand without a hawker trying to sell you something.

We did get lunch at the restaurant because it felt wrong to be freeloaders all day long. Food here has been priced more reasonably and we aren’t spending much on anything else (except sunscreen), so hopefully we’re balancing out some of the losses from Amsterdam and Istanbul.

I left this lunch with two chicken nuggets in my pocket. Waste not, want not.

We swam more and built more sandcastles. Millie ran back and forth to the ocean to fetch water for the “city” we built. She is so happy at the beach, and especially in the water.

Eventually we couldn’t take the heat anymore and were worried about burning, so we headed home.

Like yesterday, the electricity was out. I’m not sure if it’s a city thing or because we got a cheaper place just outside of town. So we opened the windows, took cold showers, and lounged around in our underwear for two hours until it came back. It was kind of miserable but also kind of fun. Millie ran a beauty salon and took our portraits.

We’re off to a new beach tomorrow and already wondering if we can handle more of the sun and heat!
