Day 384: Fly to Mexico City

Our wake up this morning was brutal. Nick’s alarm went off at 2:30, we showered and did our final packing, woke Millie up at 3:00, and then got in our Uber by 3:15. He drove us safely among the drunk drivers of Lima and we arrived at the airport at 4. We tried to eat breakfast even though our stomachs hadn’t woken up yet.

Millie is still getting gum for good travel day behavior but this morning she asked if she could have candy instead. For some reason we said yes, so she got a big cup of Jelly Beans at 5AM.

We boarded at 6 and Nick and I immediately assumed our positions: headphones in, neck pillows so tight that they push our cheeks up to our eyeballs, and eyes closed. Millie too, though her’s is shoes off, iPad on.

The flight was 6 hours and mostly uneventful except for a man next to us who had a medical emergency. Not sure what it was but they pulled him to the front of the plane and gave him an IV. Nick and I had the same series of thoughts about it. 1. I hope he’s okay 2. Omg Andes strain of Hantavirus 3. I hope we don’t have to divert the flight. We landed as planned in Mexico and he seemed okay as we were deplaning.

Luckily customs were easy, because we could feel Millie starting to lose it. Turns out waking a child up at 3am and then feeding them pure sugar isn’t the best recipe for good behavior. We had 3 hours to kill before we could get to our Airbnb and had a very leisurely lunch. She perked up and drew and played. We were beside ourselves with excitement to see Topo Chico, an icon of home. We realized this is our first time in North America in over a year.

Finally enough time passed and we called an uber. Millie passed out within one minute of driving.

We checked into our Airbnb and did more relaxing, though no sleeping. At 5 we went out to Walmart, of all places, to get snacks and breakfast for the morning. We’re in one of the best food cities in the world and got food at Walmart.

We put Millie to bed at 6:30 and we are not far behind.
