Day 362: Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, Parque Forestal, & wine tasting

[Britney Spears voice] Oops, we did it again. Nick and I were wide awake between 3AM and 7AM. I briefly considered getting everyone up for the day at 7, but fell asleep again. We didn’t wake up until 11AM. Hotel blackout curtains are a blessing and a curse. Millie claims she didn’t wake up in the night so we’re not sure how she slept so late too.

Tonight will be different. My plan is to leave the curtains open to allow for daylight, and to sleep with my phone far away from the bed. Alarm set for 8AM.

Anyway, we made the most of the second half of our day. We missed breakfast so we went to the Açaí place downstairs. I expected big nutritious smoothie bowls with granola, fruit, and nut butters, but in reality it was like dessert for breakfast. One of us was especially happy about it.

We decided to try the metro to get to our destination instead of messing with cars, uber or rental, and it worked great. 20 minutes later we were above ground and walking to the museum.

The streets were very European. There are areas of this city that look a bit grimy, but the nice streets are really really nice.

Millie spent the first 5 minutes at the museum happily drawing, and then the following 95 minutes whining incessantly. I am generally pretty patient but even I mouthed to Nick “she is driving me crazy” and had to walk away from her to prevent saying something mean. Still, we stuck with it and saw the whole museum. It wasn’t the most pleasant visit but we accomplished our goal of teaching her that whining to leave doesn’t work.

We got her a sandwich thinking hunger might have been part of the cause, and she got 50% better. I had wanted to visit some art museums but realized none of us had it in us. So we went to the adjacent park and found a playground. Millie entertained herself for a while (a miracle) and then found a Chilean friend who spoke just enough English to play for a while.

After about 30 minutes of playing together, Millie came over to us and asked “I have a question. What is a cyst?” Uh, random. We explained what it is and she told us “my friend has a cyst and it’s freaking me out and we need to leave before I look at it more.” We were hungry and obliged, but I did laugh/cringe that after this whole year of travel and trying to teach Millie about the differences between people, she couldn’t hang out with a kind child with a benign cyst on her hand.

We walked over to the restaurant for dinner. An alleged bug fell from a tree onto her (we didn’t see it) and she screamed bloody murder in a crowd of people. She definitely had a day of being very sensitive. Nick had to carry her the rest of the way.

We had dinner at a wine bar and it was excellent. We had delicious empanadas and two different wine flights of curated Chilean wines.

We taught Millie how to smell wines, and she looked scarily grown up swirling the glasses and then sniffing them intently. Good parenting or bad parenting? To be determined.

Her smelling notes were spot on. She described one as “like cherries and blood” and another as “straight up orange juice” — both very accurate. Going to email the Guinness Book of World Records to submit her as the youngest ever sommelier.

She drew her “highs and lows” for the day. Lows: the bug incident and noticing the cyst. Highs: meeting a friend and smelling wine.

We took the metro home again, and watched The Secret Garden for Sunday movie night.
